Open and release the throttle grip (Figure 34) with the handlebar pointed in different steering positions. In each position, the throttle should open and close smoothly. If the throttle cable binds or moves roughly in any position, inspect the cable for kinks, bends or other damage. Replace a damaged cable. If the cable moves smoothly and is not damaged, continue with Step 2.
Slowly rotate the throttle grip until resistance is felt. Measure the throttle grip free play at the throttle grip flange. If resistance is noted as soon as the throttle grip rotates, there is not free play. If adjustment is necessary, slide the rubber cover away from the cable adjuster. Loosen the locknut (Figure 35) and turn the cable adjuster in or out to achieve a 2-3 mm (1/8 in.) free play measurement. Tighten the locknut.
