It did work if adjusted to a slightly canted angle in USB port and slightly inserted. Have cleaned it with compressed air but has not helped. Am reluctant to pry it apart and try to readjust but can't think of anything else.

I tried downloading the driver again.
There is no power going to the connector but when I connect a wired mouse to the same USB port it works just fine. Yes, Microsoft really need to do something about this. Guess ill just have to buy a new one, but not from microsoft. The receiver part of my MS optical wireless mouse has decided to quit working. A new battery in the mouse doesn't help at all. The light on the receiver doesn't go on, and I can't get the 2 piece plastic part to separate to see if there's another battery inside it or if it only needs a new bulb?? It has to be the wires in the receiver! To many people are saying they are having the same exact problem for it to be anything else. With the USB plugged in try moving it into differnet positions. IF the light comes on and it work then there is a short in the USB sonnector.
You may be able to fix it but I think it would be easier to just buy another since I don't recall it being expensive. OF course we could all complain to Microsoft at the same time and maybe get free ones?

I tried fixing the problem form software side but no luck.
Then took the connector piece apart but it seems to be fine. Just thought maybe someone would like to see the inside without destroying your own piece:) the antenna part is this little gray thing with some copper wire on it. I think my problem is still in software, but not sure what i have essentially the same problem. The thing is just not working. I tried fixing the problem form software side but no luck.

I read all of the posts, than I pulled apart the receiver and the wires were OK. There is a micro-switch in the receiver, so I pushed it when plugged in to the computer.
The green light flashes, then I pushed the button on the bottom of the mouse, it connects. To make short of this, do not open the receiver case, just use a pen and push the green 'connect' light (must be in USB port), it will activate reset switch and blink. Next, push 'connect' on the bottom of mouse. Posted on Mar 19, 2009.
Quick fix for the still mouse problem. This proberly won't work for everyone. If you have tried everything else and your about to throw the mouse in the bin then try this 1. Plug the receiver into your usb 2.
Start moving the mouse around 3. Rotate the reciever round a couple of times in either direction whilst moving the mouse. In my case the mouse started working after a couple of trys 5. Superglue the receiver in the working position. Things to bear in mind after carrying out this procedure. You will not be able to rotate the receiver after glueing. This may cover any sockets next to the USB port.
If possible try to position the receiver in a flat position so that it will fit back into the mouse when not in use i know this isn't the best solution but it is a quick fix. Posted on May 19, 2009.

If the wireless receiver is plugged in, the light is not on, the computer makes an unusual sound (dun dun dun!) when you plug in the receiver, if the red light under the mouse is working. Open the device manager, for windows 7 press the start button and type 'Device Manager' Find the mouse on the list, it should have a yellow exclamation point next to it. Right click the device Click 'Update Driver' Click 'Brows My Computer' Click 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer' Un-check the box that says 'Show compatible hardware' On the left hand side, choose 'Microsoft' On the right hand side, choose 'Microsoft USB Wireless Mouse (Mouse and Keyboard Center)' Once the drivers have installed successfully, you will need to reboot your computer. Once the computer has rebooted, if the mouse is still not responding, you might need to reconnect the receiver with the mouse by pressing the button on the receiver, then the button on the bottom of the mouse that says 'connect' This same process should work for most other windows operating system, you just need to figure out how to find the device manager.

If it your lid on the top of you mouse doesent pop off, keep the star button pushed in and use a knife to pop it off. I had to use a knife because i dont have any finger nails. That was the problem with mine Posted on Dec 27, 2009. The problem with the mouse is that the dumb@ss engineers did not account for the rotation of the antenna part of the usb plug in portion. At some point, continued rotations in one direction will sever all the wires between the two moving parts. Fix is either replace broken usb antenna part, or do what I did which was tear (literally, as it's fused plastic) apart the spinning antenna housing, pulling the mini PCB and resoldering and insulating all the wires back together, then more or less gluing the entire assembly back together as non-moving part.
